Every Green Day fan has had a breaking point - a moment where they finally realised that the band weren't the same trio they fell in love with upon first listening. Selling out is an accusation which has plagued them throughout their career, from signing with a major record label to release Dookie in 1994. They were subsequently rejected by the punk scene from which they came, revenge for an act of perceived betrayal explored in the Insomniac track '86'. It doesn't bear thinking what their old friends think of Green Day's far more flagrant instances of selling out since. Billie Joe's appearance on The Voice is certainly up there, and even their Justin Bieber-slating tantrum in 2012 seemed a poor-disguised effort to seem like true punk rockers again - and drum up free publicity of course.
