10 Psychedelic Rock Albums You Need To Know
8. Innerspeaker - Tame Impala (2010)
There's no getting away from this album. This was the record that started it all off for Kevin Parker - he was in other bands before, but his project Tame Impala launched him into mainstream success.
Since this album's release, Parker has developed his sound into a more accessible and commercialised form of music: psychedelic pop for the masses, if you will. His more recent stuff certainly has its merits but if your after something a little more experimental, something with a few more fuzzy guitars and slightly less synthesis, then this is the album for you.
Although the low fi aesthetic on this record certainly brings a sense of the archaic into the mix, Parker was able to pull all those distinctly '60s sounds into the 21st Century. Even 10 years after its release, this record still feels contemporary, particularly with the break beat drumming and the use of modern synths.
This was before Parker was writing conventionally structured pop numbers. The track Alter Ego in particular showcases Parker's lack of concern with typical song structuring. There are several other tracks that quickly transcend into improvisational jam sessions, contributing to the overall dream-like quality of the record.
