10 Psychedelic Rock Albums You Need To Know
7. Beard, Wives, Denim - Pond (2012)
Pond are very much cut from the same cloth as Tame Impala. Kevin Parker previously played with Pond, and even produced several records for them. As well as that, Pond frontman Nick Allbrook, and multi-instrumentalist Jay Watson have both been touring members of Impala over the years.
Whereas Kevin Parker's brainchild has been churning out the same old sound for the last few records, Pond continues to deliver the goods with each album building on the last. It's fair to say these guys have followed the Tame Impala trend, moving more into a synth pop sphere of psych rock, but their sound has remained fresh.
But if you're after a mind altering musical trip then Beard, Wives, Denim is the album that will scratch that itch. There's a lot of influences coming into this record - you can hear a touch of The White Stripes at times, and the song Sorry I was Under The Sky is reminiscent of a melody you might hear on an early Neil Young record. But, everything gets filtered through the Aussie psych stylings of Nick Allbrook.
The stand out track comes in the form of Moth Wings - there hasn't been a more satisfying guitar tone since its release.
