10 Rap Songs That Sampled Classical Music
7. C U When U Get There - Coolio (1997)
Sample: Canon in D (Pachebel)
Producer: DJ Romero
Gangsta's Paradise is the best and worst thing that ever happened to Coolio. While it was one of the biggest rap hits of the 90s and won him a Grammy, it also casted aside the rest of his discography and turned him into a "one-hit wonder", even if he reached the charts with three other songs.
Among those was 1997's C U When U Get There.
Coolio’s verse is actually quite good, but, judging by the comment section, few people read the lyrics. Apparently, many listeners seem to misunderstand the title as "C U When I Get There" and think this song laments the passing of a loved one, à la See You Again (and to that end, Pachebel’s sentimental notes probably help). But don't let all those RIP comments fool you, this is absolutely not what the song is about.
There is not heaven, but a symbolic place of wisdom and success, that Coolio (and 40 Thez) speak from. If jealous haters and misguided gangsters would educate themselves and mend their ways, they too would reach that mountain top, hence the title.
