When the nominations for the Video Music Awards' Video Of The Year were announced in July, Minaj was disappointed to find that the video for her song Anaconda was not on the list. The song is an anthem for female self-love and the video features Minaj and other women of colour celebrating their bodies. Minaj tweeted that "when the 'other' girls drop a video that breaks records and impacts culture they get that nomination" and "If your video celebrates women with very slim bodies, you will be nominated for vid of the year". Taylor Swift- who was nominated for the "Bad Blood" video- felt personally called out. The two exchanged tweets and the media weighed in, with many feeling that Swift had missed the point of Minaj's message- that women of colour experience extra discrimination in the music industry (and everywhere), particularly in relation to their bodies.
