Following Minaj and Swift's (actually fairly productive) public dialogue about race and body politics, it seemed the VMA controversy had died down. However, in an interview released a few days before the awards, Miley Cyrus (who was hosting the ceremony) made some deeply unwise comments about Minaj. She claimed she would've respected her complaints if they'd been delivered in a more "kind" or "polite" manner. It's not a good look for a white pop star to play the Angry Black Woman card (a stereotype against which black women are constantly forced to fight). Cyrus was lampooned by many members of the press and supported by others but ultimately it was Minaj herself who had the last word. When collecting her award for Best Hip-Hop video (for "Anaconda"), Minaj finished her speech, turned to Cyrus and said "And now back to this b**** that had a lot to say about me the other day in the press - Miley, whats good?". Mic. Dropped.
