6. Korn In A Crop Circle
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQ8mWNQrCrk As we ushered in a new century Korn were one of the biggest bands on the planet. They probably taught it would stay that way and they wouldn't be forced to stage such absurd novelty performances in order to attract people's attention. In promotion for the album Korn III: Remember Who You Are which the band recorded as a four piece using no Pro Tools or additional software production an event was organised just outside Bakersfield, California, which would be streamed online. At first the band distributed news stories about a crop circle which had apparently been discovered with a KoRn logo attached. This was followed with the band organizing an online only concert performance in said crop circle. There were no audience present except for the production crew and the performance was apparently inspired by Pink Floyd. The claimed to have used the opportunity in order to branch out and explore new avenues of their music. It was directed by Russell Thomas, who is also responsible for the direction of live performances from Bill Bailey and Coldplay. Credit where credit is due, however, this performance wasn't just a token concert in total the band performed 17 songs from their back catalog and latest material to date. Frontman Jonathan Davis even took time to have a jam session and played some guitar himself. A rather unflattering article at the time of this performance stated that Korn performed to exactly as many people as they deserved - commenting their self destruction and vandalism in the creation of a crop circle would no doubt take ecological and financial tolls on the farmer who allowed them to destroy the harvest (it's not actually clear who the farmer was or what he was paid) and that by not inviting anyone to be a part of the performance - even those from their fan club it seemed like a much more wasted opportunity then it was made out to be. Though personally I think the only wasted thing about it was that it was broadcast on MySpace.
