7. The Beatles Rooftop Concert
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1TEkGFbdpk They have said that before anyone did anything in music the Beatles did everything. In this case they'd probably be right. The Beatles rooftop concert on January 30th 1969 was a sporadic decision taken by the band who had been recording their Let It Be documentary film at the same time wanting to end the sessions on a high and with the sporadic social experiment of a live recording in an unusual venue. Somebody suggested the roof of the building they were currently in the Apple building on Saville Row and the plan was put in action. At about midday the band performed for just shy of 42 minutes and played a set to an audience of roughly four people not counting those who heard the noise but couldn't see it on the streets below and five camera's. Due to the fact that the band had stopped touring completely in 1966 and they broke up in the following year, this would be the last live performance they would ever give. The break up of the Beatles has been well documented by musical historians since it occurred but its probably still worth noting the jovial nature with which the band interacted between one another. There was certainly no hint that this was to be one of the last incidents in which the four members would be both seen - and heard - together in public. Interestingly enough, the band performed Get Back a total of five times in order to both warm up the instruments and also get their levels right. A lot of the performance, including their full rendition of the UK national anthem, was lost because it occurred while the tapes were being changed. With all that being said of course there are still a considerable generation of people who will remember the parody of this incident, when Homer Simpson and his Bee Sharps appeared on the rooftop of Moe's Tavern for their final concert, with guest star George Harrison commenting "it's been done" in a display of rare comedic talent.
