10 Rock "Sellout" Albums That Are Actually Really Good
4. California - Blink-182
The pop punk world seemed absolutely gutted when Blink-182 announced that after a reunion, Tom Delonge was officially out of the band again. Drafting in Matt Skiba from Alkaline Trio, most original Blink fans tended to swear off the new direction brought forth on California, not wanting to accept a new incarnation without Tom. However, California ended up being exactly the recharge that these guys needed.
Almost pretending that Neighborhoods never existed, California is a back to basics pop punk record that has a lot more heart that it should for being cranked out by men who are almost in their 50s. Across songs like Bored to Death and No Future, it's clear that these guys still know how to write a killer hook, along with some of the juiciest bass grooves Mark Hoppus had delivered in ages. Skiba also seems to be the right guy for the job, with his solo songs like Teenage Satellites and She's Out Of Her Mind being some of the standouts on the record.
It's not all about reliving the glory days though, with songs like San Diego and Cynical being a pretty grim look at the state of the band at this fractured point. Also it goes without saying that Travis Barker is his usual badass self, storming across his kit with the same fire he had back in his prime. If you look back on this record after a few more years, it's actually aging a lot better than you probably remember.
