10 Rock Albums That Artists Want You To Forget About
8. Diver Down - Van Halen
Van Halen really were the lighthearted party band that the metal community needed at the turn of the decade. Arriving like gangbusters on their amazing debut record, this was the moment where metal stopped being doom and gloom and created the template for the party rock sound that acts like T Rex and David Bowie only hinted at. On the other hand, David Lee Roth wasn't necessarily able to turn in solid gold on every single release.
Just as they were about to come off of a tour for their album Fair Warning, Van Halen were actually called back into the studio to work, resulting in one of the most fragmented releases of their career in Diver Down. Despite having some amazing cuts like Little Guitars and Cathedral, most of this album is half full of cover songs, many of which were made as a vocal showcase for Roth than anything else.
Outside of some standouts like their version of Pretty Woman, most of the band don't like to revisit this one, seeing it as a potentially good album that was sent kicking and screaming into existence. While these guys were able to recover from this slump nicely with their amazing return to form on 1984, this is the one drop in quality from the Roth era that the members themselves might want to cover up.
