10 Rock Albums That Artists Want You To Forget About
2. David Bowie - David Bowie
Not every act is able to knock is out of the park on their first try. In fact, some of the greatest artists in the world tend to take the slowburn approach and end up putting out some of their best stuff on their 3rd or even 4th releases. Though there's no shame in having a somewhat spotty debut record, David Bowie's first step up to the plate is one of the few cases where the artist himself is actively discouraging you from listening to it.
Released around the same time as the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's album, Bowie's self-titled debut is a quantum leap from what he would become known for in the characters of Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane. Rather than the blown-out glam rock stylings of his glory period, these are folky ballads that veer into cartoony territory depending on which song you find yourself in.
While there are some interesting tidbits like Please Mr. Gravedigger to be found amongst the pile, Bowie was so appalled by the results that his next album was also self-titled, trying to in essence to do a reboot on the start of his career. Given that most of us jumped on the Bowie hype train on Space Oddity, this little gem from 1967 was buried before it even had time to grow.
