10 Rock Albums That Get Way Too Much Hate
9. The Red Album - Weezer
There's a common belief among Weezer fans that Make Believe is where things started to really go off the rails. Although most of the musical styles hadn't changed that much, hearing the band on autopilot was just the tip of the iceberg of what would soon come on albums like Raditude. As much as it looked like it was all downhill from there, The Red Album showed that Rivers Cuomo was at least going in the right direction a little bit.
Then again, this is definitely a far cry from what you got on the Blue Album or Pinkerton, with songs like Troublemaker being a bit too mindless for even Weezer fans to take seriously. Weezer had grown up since then though, and this feels like the closest attempt at dad rock that they have ever made, like on Heart Songs where Rivers namechecks his inspirations or reminiscing about his glory days on Everybody Get Dangerous.
They also don't get enough credit for taking a chance by letting the rest of the band take the lead on some songs, especially with a track like Cold Dark World having some real power behind it. This is pretty lopsided to be called a great Weezer album, but it's far from the worst thing out there. To their credit, they at least knew that they messed up on the last album and were trying to get back on track.
