10 Rock Albums That Get Way Too Much Hate
4. Continuum - John Mayer
Every so often, there comes that artist that has a strange form of anti charisma. Whereas most bands have the frontman that you can't look away from, these are the guys that give off a vibe that makes you either want to turn away from them or ignore their existence altogether. It's a shame that John Mayer got that vibe so early, considering he dropped one of the best soft rock albums of all time.
Compared to the other doofuses holding acoustic guitars, Mayer always knew his stuff as a musician, and Continuum might be his magnum opus. Getting to work with some of the most accomplished session players in the business, the sounds on this record are immaculate, with people like Pino Palladino giving the songs just what they need to become stuck in your brain all day long.
And as much as people are going to hate to admit it, a lot of the magic on this record does come from John, even when he's playing dead simple stuff. If you look at a song like Gravity, you can practically sing the entire guitar solo without even thinking about it, and that's not something that's going to come from just some hack songwriter. This is a guy who actually studied all of his favorite records and fought tooth and nail to make an album that sounds this pristine.
