10 Rock Albums That Get Way Too Much Hate
5. Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino - Arctic Monkeys
With years in the rearview, people are still scratching their heads as to what the hell was going on in Alex Turner's brain when he made this. The Arctic Monkeys had become one of the few remaining rock bands to see chart success, and here they go making something that sounds like it should be on a parody version of a lounge act. That's a fair assessment, but what if you were told that that was kind of the point?
From the getgo, the Monkeys never hyped this up to be a rock album or anything, looking to just expand their vision beyond just the desert sounding rock that they were able to make back in the day. As the album plays out, you can tell where everything is not quite right, but you also have bits and pieces of someone like David Bowie laced throughout the songs here, with Alex Turner trying on his smooth clerk persona on the title track.
In fact, the entire ethos behind this record feels very Bowie in some respects. The Monkeys may have never been that vocal about their love for the Thin White Duke, but having the guts to make something this divisive and not give a damn what your audience thinks is actually pretty admirable. Even though it's not as hard hitting as Whatever People Say or Favorite Worst Nightmare, you have to give the record a little bit of props. While not being rock, it did exactly what it set out to do regardless.
