10 Rock Albums That Were A Nightmare To Make
1. Rumours - Fleetwood Mac
As far as band dynamics go, any romantic relationship between band members is normally a recipe for disaster. For all of the great music you might be able to make on your own, it only takes a couple of arguments for everything to boil over, with raw wounds that are not necessarily going to heal once you get out of the control room. It's bad enough to have one volatile couple in the band, but Fleetwood Mac had to deal with everyone breaking up at the exact same time on Rumours.
Looking to live up to the hype that they had off of singles like Rhiannon, the band ducked into the studio right when Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks were breaking up and Christine and John McVie were finalizing their divorce. While they did their best to keep things professional and friendly, you can definitely hear the hostility in the songs, with each band member lashing out at their former partners like Buckingham's jab at Nicks on Go Your Own Way or Christine trying to make some sort of peaceful resolution with John on Songbird, wishing him solace at the end of everything.
Even with all of the raw nerves that were going around, something interesting happened in between the band's arguments, with the songs turning into some of the most radio ready singles to ever grace the radio, from Stevie Nicks's Dreams sounding much more earthy than before and You Make Loving Fun being one of the few bright moments on the entire record. The Mac were always a few minutes away from fracturing in the studio, but they could always rely on the chain of music to keep them together.
