10 Rock Albums That Were A Nightmare To Make
6. Damn the Torpedoes - Tom Petty
Change was definitely in the air for Tom Petty as he neared the end of the '70s. After his first step up to the plate failed to establish a relationship with American listeners, its success over in England as well as the positive response to his second offering You're Gonna Get It made audiences eager to hear what he had coming down the pipeline later. Though Petty had the songs for his magnum opus, it would be a headache and a half trying to bring it to fruition.
With a new producer in Jimmy Iovine, Petty and the Heartbreakers slogged over every single take, as Iovine was never happy with the drummer Stan Lynch. The most egregious song was Refugee, which got slaved over day after day after day, causing guitarist Mike Campbell to leave the project for a little while to get away from the tension.
Despite having their best songs, the Heartbreakers were also dealt a heavy blow when their label tried to seize the copyright to Petty's songs, leading to a lawsuit that resulted in Petty renegotiating his contract so that he would actually be compensated for his writing. Damn the Torpedoes eventually became one of the definitive Tom Petty records, but the story behind it is almost as intriguing as the songs within.
