10 Rock Albums That Were Ahead Of Their Time
3. Pinkerton - Weezer
As the grunge wave started to clearly wither away after the death of Kurt Cobain, Weezer really were a sense of comfort in those dark times. After spending the better part of 3 years singing about how depressed people were being a rock star, it was a breath of fresh air hearing these nerds from California plugging their guitars in and having a good time, almost sounding like a '90s version of what the Cars had done back in the '70s. Once they tapped into their angsty side though, a lot of fans really didn't know what to make of Pinkerton.
Upon release, Rivers Cuomo's TMI lyrics and harsh production across this record actually killed the golden age of the band, with the album getting singled out as the worst album of the year and the group going on hiatus and not resurfacing until the '00s. When they went back to their power pop roots though, fans started to take a bit of a closer look back at Pinkerton and found something a lot more interesting the second time around.
While all of the more uncomfortable bits are still in there every now and again, this is actually a pivotal album in the rise of the emo genre, taking all of those harsh tendencies and layering your heart out naked in front of the world. It could not have been easy for Rivers to essentially watch his personal lyrics being burned in front of his face in the '90s, but it's those same lyrics that have helped modern artists be a lot more honest in their craft.
