10 Rock Albums That Were Ahead Of Their Time

3. In Utero - Nirvana

At the start of the 90's, grunge became one of the greatest shakeups in the history of rock. With spandex and hairspray being traded in for flannel and greasy hair, many of the big wigs couldn't put their finger on how these bands were getting so successful. Though Nirvana may have fired the first shot with their breakthrough release Nevermind, the followup was going to be a much rougher ride.

Instead of going for a more commercial sound, the band shacked up in a studio in Montana with legendary indie producer Steve Albini and crafted In Utero. It may be looked at as a classic now, but the band's record company were absolutely disgusted as to what they were hearing. Rather than another helping of punk riffs and tuneful melodies, these songs were a lot more avant garde and had a much heavier bent than the band's predecessor.

These attributes could have led to a career faceplant, but each of the touches on In Utero played to each members' strengths, with Kurt Cobain ripping apart his soul from track to track. Nevermind will forever be known as the cornerstone of the alternative movement, but if fans want to hear what true authenticity sounds like, In Utero is a must-listen in every sense of the word.
