10 Rock Bands People Love To Hate
5. Babymetal
A catalogue of sworn enemies have existed throughout human history, jostling each other for overall dominance; good and evil, light and dark, fire and ice, but they surely all pale in comparison to the feud between Babymetal and metal elitists. Babymetal originally formed in 2010 and contrary to popular belief, have not always enjoyed the backing of a major record label. In 2013, Babymetal even spent a short spell as an independent band before signing a new record deal in 2014.
Genre splicing is not a new concept, but the idea of combining J-Pop and heavy metal was something that had never been attempted until Babymetal burst onto the scene. Generally fashioned as ‘Kawaii metal’, Babymetal released their self-titled debut album in 2014 to an immense international reception. However, not everyone was sold on the concept. Metal fans have called them manufactured and not a genuine metal group, while publisher Metal Sucks branded them as nothing more than ‘theater’ splashed with ‘modern pop tropes’.
With Babymetal, you either love them or you hate them, there is no middle ground. The band now have three studio albums to their name as well as a plethora of awards from the likes of GQ Magazine, Loudwire, Vogue Japan, MTV, Metal Hammer and Kerrang.
