10 Rock Bands That Fell Apart At The Top Of Their Game

1. Nirvana

Around the start of the '90s, the rock world was in desperate need of a shakeup. As much as the hair metal scene may have been fun at the time, everything was getting so oversaturated that it started to become a parody of itself. Coming out of Seattle though, Nirvana helped us all into the next generation with alternative rock, with the most reluctant rock star right at the center.

Although Kurt Cobain may have liked the idea of being famous, he was not really prepared for the baggage that came with it, often being uncomfortable with people calling him an icon or the voice of his generation. And it almost looked like he was trying to run away from that idea on In Utero, where he decided to get a lot more caustic with the band's sound on songs like Scentless Apprentice.

What we didn't realize was just how deep his unhappiness ran, with Kurt getting more and more strung out on heroin and losing his will to live. After escaping a rehab facility, Kurt was eventually found at his home in Seattle, having killed himself with a shotgun a few days prior. With the voice of the people gone, Nirvana quickly folded in on itself, with Dave Grohl eventually having to start at square one again with the Foo Fighters. Nirvana was definitely a necessary band for the future of rock and roll, but sometimes those stars burn too bright too fast.
