10 Rock Bands That Fell Apart At The Top Of Their Game
7. The Sex Pistols
You'd be a fool to think that any of the career moves that the Sex Pistols made in the early days were premeditated. Although Malcolm McLaren likes to take credit for sculpting the band into what they became, the entire genesis of these scruffy punks was all about unleashing chaos wherever they went. Like all ideas based around anarchy though, things hit a sudden brick wall really quick.
After becoming the most notorious band in Britain after crashing the Royal Jubilee, the Pistols' trek to the States didn't go well at all. With new bassist Sid Vicious replacing Glen Matlock, most of the shows on this leg of the tour got a lot more ugly than even some punks were ready for, as Vicious got more and more self destructive as the tour went on. Nevermind the fact that the guy could barely play the bass with all the junk in his veins, he also had to worry about the amount of blood loss that comes from carving "I need a fix" into your chest.
By the time that they made it to California, the band was basically done, with Johnny Rotten practically giving up halfway through the gig, announcing it would be their last performance, and every member of the band finding their way back home separately. The idea of anarchy may have been fun at first, but once you make it your lifestyle, you have a lot of wounds to nurse back to health.
