10 Rock Bands That Fell Apart At The Top Of Their Game
6. Rage Against the Machine
Whether they knew it or not, Rage Against the Machine were on the brink of something groundbreaking when they started. As they started to play the same clubs in California that were hair metal mainstays, their unique brand of hip hop, metal, and old school rock and roll would become the basis for nu metal just a few years later. And just as the Limp Bizkits of the world started to get a bit too out of hand, Rage capped off the next decade of their career by...never releasing an album again.
Coming off of the Battle of Los Angeles, every member of the band seemed to fracture off into different factions, with everyone disagreeing on elements of the band's direction. It also wasn't necessarily a great time for their image either, with bassist Tim Commerford coming under fire after crashing the stage of the MTV Awards when Limp Bizkit was speaking.
In an effort to make themselves less cartoony, the band tried to soothe things over with a covers album, only to run into the same problems when they got the idea to tour again. Fighting over everything from the color of their T-shirts to their stage behavior, everything came to an end with Zack de la Rocha putting out a statement saying that he was leaving Rage behind. While their political philosophies were still intact, you sometimes need a little more than that if you're going to go the distance.
