10 Rock Bands That Fell Apart At The Top Of Their Game

3. Led Zeppelin

As the years have gone on, it's easy to just claim that all of Led Zeppelin's records have some degree of brilliance to them. In just over a decade, Jimmy Page's riffs and Robert Plant's vocal prowess became the blueprint for what hard rock would become, having just the right amount of swagger and muscle to keep you coming back again and again. This was a band of brothers though, and the only thing that stood in their way was mortality.

Around the time that the band were starting their tour plans for their album In Through The Out Door, John Bonham went out for a night of heavy drinking and ended up passing out in Jimmy Page's house. Unable to wake him up the next day, Bonham was pronounced dead at the house, having asphyxiated through the night on his own vomit. While drummers tend to come and go in rock and roll, this was an entirely different matter.

Bonham was always known as the resident animal behind the drum kit, and the raw power that the band possessed at the time would never be the same without him providing the stellar backbeat. If anything, Zeppelin not continuing on feels like a bittersweet tribute to Bonzo. Rock and roll might be a vicious business to work in, but Bonham was a true one of a kind, and his absence was enough to retire the Zeppelin moniker for good.
