10 Rock Bands That Got Banned For Stupid Reasons

1. Everything on the 9/11 Precautions

There's no denying the massive impact that the world felt after 9/11. Never before in America had anyone witnessed such a drastic terrorist event, which would go on to haunt the lives of many New Yorkers to this day. Though many artists were doing anything they could to help the wounded first responders, some of the heads of radio stations thought that it might be best if they take charge.

In the aftermath of the attacks, Clear Channel came out with a list of songs that were considered to be insensitive in the wake of recent events. While something like this may be perfectly understandable if the songs are in poor taste, the limit of what constitutes "poor taste" was really pushed to the limit on this one. Among the banned songs ended up being a lot of metal like Metallica and Guns N Roses, but things get downright funny when you start including third parties.

Instead of your typical songs glorifying violence, you'd get songs by the Barenaked Ladies and the Bangles' Walk Like an Egyptian sprinkled into the mix. The most egregious case was probably Imagine by John Lennon, whose overall message of peace for the entire world somehow came across as something insensitive for someone who witnessed a horrific attack. Since this kind of ban was upheld by practically no one over the years, it's safe to say that the public is more concerned with the freedom that artists have rather than deliberately stifling them.
