10 Rock Bands That Got Banned For Stupid Reasons
2. John Lennon's Unholy Behavior
Unless you have been living under a rock, the Beatles were a pretty big deal at the start of the '60s. After conquering America and Great Britain off the strength of A Hard Day's Night and Please Please Me, these lads from Liverpool were quickly becoming one of the most inescapable trends in music. Then again, things got a little heated in America once the topic of religion was brought up.
Amid the Fabs changing up their style on albums like Revolver and Rubber Soul, an interview made the rounds of John Lennon claiming that their group was more popular than Jesus. Though this kind of remark was fine enough in England, the American South was having none of it, going so far as to burn and boycott anything that had the Beatles' name associated with it. While John did issue a sort of apology for lines he thought were taken out of context, that didn't stop people from hating the Fabs and even showing up at concerts to denounce them.
One particular incident in the South did culminate in the group deciding not to tour anymore, with someone setting off a firecracker and each band member looking at each other to make sure they hadn't been shot. After years of pettiness to go around and even the Vatican pardoning Lennon's comments in 2008, it's safe to say that this issue has finally been put to rest.
