10 Rock Bands That Had A Really Shaky Start
9. Aerosmith
The arrival of Aerosmith on the rock scene marked a bit of a turning point for hard rock. As opposed to having to import most of the good hard rock from over in England, these Bad Boys from Boston were the first of their kind to really bring an edge back into the traditional rock and roll format. Though the foundation of something great was there, fans took their sweet time before warming up to these boogie rockers.
Although Aerosmith's debut sported some impressive songs like Mama Kin and the ballad Dream On, most of the critics weren't having any of it, casually writing them off as just a cheap ripoff of the Rolling Stones. While it sounds crazy today, it's not hard to see where they're coming from, with Steven Tyler's lower register singing sounding nowhere near like what he would be doing later down the line.
It also didn't help that their label weren't really bending over backwards to promote this thing either. Around the same time that these guys released their debut, most of the attention was paid to another act named Bruce Springsteen, who had just signed a deal and was being heralded as the next Bob Dylan. Everything seemed to have played out in the end though, with Get Your Wings arriving and eventually giving way to classics like Toys in the Attic and Rocks. A nice start...just needed a bit more polish though.
