10 Rock Bands That Have Two Frontmen

9. System of a Down

The nu metal movement wasn't exactly known for its massive vocal prowess from one band to the next. Though some heavyhitters like Jonathan Davis of Korn certainly had unique voices for their time, the amount of real polish in the vocals wasn't easy to come by amid the Coal Chambers of the world. While System of a Down fit snuggly in between the nu metal categories, no other act on the scene could sport the chops they had on the mic.

That's not to say that some of the vocals aren't an acquired taste though, with Serj Tankian's ultra-nasally vocal style being one of the more flagrant turn-offs for some fans. However, the real magic comes in the interplay that Tankian has with Daron Malakian on almost every song. Since Malakian ended up writing the bulk of the System tunes back in the day, a lot of the songs function as duets of sorts between both performers, like on the weird back and forth of Hypnotize.

At the same time, the real gorgeous side of their work lies in the way they have voices overlaying on top of each other amid the hectic riffs. Especially in the final breakdown of Chop Suey!, the way both men sing around each other makes for some of the most beautiful moments in metal history. For a genre that's not meant to be the most clean cut of genres, System of a Down makes those beautiful voices work really damn well.
