10 Rock Bands That Made Metal Songs
1. I Want You (She's So Heavy) - The Beatles
In terms of every single genre of rock that has come out since the '60s, it's hard to think of something that the Beatles didn't pioneer. From experimenting in the studio to turning the world of rock and roll into an art form, most of the reasons why rock is taken seriously these days comes from the lads from Liverpool coming up with ideas in Abbey Road Studios. And when it comes to metal music, you actually have a few options to choose from.
Though the beginnings of heavy rock tend to cite songs like Helter Skelter from the White Album or Hey Bulldog as the start of metal music, I Want You (She's So Heavy) may be the real Patient Zero, stretching on for 7 minutes of pure mayhem. While the foundation of the song is actually fairly simple with John Lennon only singing a handful of lyrics, this entire track captures the moment where the blues began to turn into metal, with the verses having an almost playful laid back blues guitar running through it.
When you hit the bridge sections and eventual coda though, the entire band slows down a lot for the next riff, almost sounding like a hard rock version of a classical piece, with John screaming his lungs out and the rest of the band creating a wall of noise around him, from Ringo's snare bashing to the white noise machine that was used during the session just to give another layer of ambience to the mix. The Beatles definitely fit more into the pop category of rock and roll more often than not, but if you only listened to the last 2 minutes of this song, you would swear that it was doom metal.
