10 Rock Bands That Made Songs Specifically For Movies
1. Would? - Alice in Chains
The entire story of Alice in Chains has always been shrouded in darkness in some way. Just after releasing their debut album Facelift, they were already on the verge of collapsing in on themselves, as each member started to struggle with their own vices. Along the way, Jerry Cantrell also was asked if they would contribute a song to the film Singles, and Jerry took all of that drug turmoil and put it into Would?.
Written in response to the death of Mother Love Bone singer Andy Wood, this could be considered the quintessential Alice in Chains song, featuring one of Layne Staley’s best vocal performances while also acting as a bit of commentary about the band itself. Even though the song is explicitly written about Andy cut down in his prime, themes about being controlled by some unknown master and going back into the depths of Hell has clear parallels to what was going on in Layne’s life, as he went further and further down the heroin rabbit hole.
After becoming the standout track on the soundtrack, the song actually found its way onto their next album Dirt, working as the final cut to close everything out. While it might not have been written for this album, it also acts as a good way to close out an album that’s about nothing but self destruction. Even with all of the bad habits that Layne and the entire band have been up to on this album, those final notes still resonate with everyone who hears them, as they look you in the eye and ask the audience if they could have done anything better to help them.
