10 Rock Bands That Made Songs Specifically For Movies
2. Hey Bulldog - The Beatles
By the time that the Beatles had gotten to the tail end of the ‘60s, they had come to the conclusion that they no longer wanted to be movie stars. Even Elvis had to get sick of making movies sometime, so their producer Brian Epstein had the idea of their final movie having their minimal involvement, being a completely animated feature with actors voicing them on screen. The movie needed a soundtrack though, and what they gave the crew was far more than just table scraps.
Although the Beatles originals tend to seem like odds and ends in between the White Album and Abbey Road, Hey Bulldog was a spur of the moment creation that went incredibly well. Needing to film a promotional video for their song Lady Madonna, the Beatles decided to let the film crew in and kept on working on this song, which was a lot nastier than what we were used to. Being led by John Lennon’s piano figure, this whole song feels like the Beatles’ attempt at hard rock, especially when Paul McCartney goes for the John Entwistle-like bass grooves underneath everything.
Aside from the lyrics not really being about much of anything, every second of this song feels like pure fun in the studio, from the roaring guitar solo from George Harrison to both John and Paul goofing off towards the end of the track by making different woof sounds as someone commands them to be quiet during the end of the song. It may have just been to fill out the track listing, but most other bands couldn’t make a rush job groove this hard.
