10 Rock Bands That Never Sold Out
7. Pearl Jam
Part of the beauty of the early grunge pioneers was how much they were against the mainstream. As much as they may have been flaunted across MTV, you could tell that someone like Kurt Cobain wasn't exactly too comfortable being on the same channel that was showing bands like Motley Crue a few years earlier. As far as selling out is concerned though, Pearl Jam may be one of the few bands that attempted to sell in.
From day one, Eddie Vedder was always more concerned about the well being of his core audience, and he spent almost every single tour in the '90s trying to connect with them on a more profound level. First we got the Ticketmaster debacle, which one them major points in the hearts of the people by going to war with the money hungry ticket companies.
As the years went on though, the band kept taking every risk they could on their albums, almost like they were intentionally trying to lose the bandwagon fans they had gotten on albums like Ten and Vs. Looking back on albums like No Code or Binaural, these are almost art rock in their construction, which is a bit surreal coming from the band that was more into classic rock worship in their heyday. Though some grunge acts have really found their niche and stuck with it, Pearl Jam have always been interested in twisting their music into any new shape they can. It's called evolution, baby.
