10 Rock Bands That Wrote Songs In Different Genres

1. Tomorrow Never Knows - The Beatles

From the minute they started playing clubs around Liverpool, The Beatles were never content to just be your run of the mill rock and roll band. Along with the Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly songs that they loved so much, those first few records by the Fab Four also had some interesting turns, from the acoustic ballads like Yesterday to the showtunes that Paul McCartney would sing like Til There Was You or A Taste of Honey. The back half of the decade was going to be different though, and Tomorrow Never Knows was the first daring leap into unchartered territory.

As much as albums like Rubber Soul may have been hinting at something bigger coming later down the line, Revolver was the first time where they started to flirt with psychedelic leanings, with Tomorrow Never Knows being ground zero for their adventurous side. Originally titled The Void, this was John Lennon toying with the avant garde, being inspired by Indian music to base the entire song on just one chord for the entirety of the track. While that sounds boring on paper, what makes it work is everything that goes on around it, from Paul McCartney assembling different tape loops to George Harrison having his guitar solo played backwards throughout most of the track.

While taking lyrics from Timothy Leary's book the Psychedelic Experience, this song seemed to point to where the '60s were going to be heading in the next few years, being a sort of teaser for the outlandish sounds that were going to come out of the hippy movement during the Summer of Love. Even with half a century under its belt, Tomorrow Never Knows still sounds like what the future of rock should be.
