10 Rock Bands Who Blatantly Copied Other Artists
2. Step Out - Oasis
Cases of plagiarism on the part of the Gallagher Brothers have been following them around since they first started back in the mid '90s. Ever since the first time Liam Gallagher uttered a word in his trademark Mancunian drawl, people have lined up to say that Oasis are blatant ripoffs of the Beatles. Whereas some spots do sound Beatlesque, the real plagiarism came from the other side of the musical spectrum.
Released as a B-side to Don't Look Back In Anger, Step Out remains one of the biggest low lights of Oasis' career, not even being released on the B-sides collection the Masterplan. Then again, there might be a reason why this got lost in the shuffle, considering Noel Gallaghers' fairly obvious love of Stevie Wonder on the chorus. While the rest of the song is clearly Noel's, every rhythmic accent of the chorus is lifted from Wonder's own Uptight, down to the fact that Noel just changed the words.
Even though Noel had to pay a lawsuit on behalf of Wonder's estate, he still insists that he never maliciously intends to steal songs, instead likening it to when people use songs as a blueprint when first getting the ball rolling. For as much as Noel does have a point here, the similarities are too scary close to really ignore.
