10 Rock Bands Who Had Horrible Original Names

1. On a Friday - Radiohead

Band names are a bit of a tricky beast. In just a few words, your goal is to assemble a moniker with just the right amount of mystery and intrigue to get people to listen to your music. Or...if you're one of the greatest bands of the 90's who could care less about mainstream potential, just name yourself after your schedule.

Though Radiohead have been heralded as musical giants because of albums like OK Computer and Kid A, their initial beginnings at a school in Oxfordshire had a much more abysmal name. As opposed to thinking of something creative or off-the-wall, the band called themselves On A Friday. Was this name a mysterious allusion to a certain important timeframe? Well...sort of. When asked about it, the guys just called themselves that because that was the day that they would rehearse every week while at school.

On a Friday ended up having a great regional success, but once they were signed by EMI, they were in desperate need of a name change. Quickly meshing together the title of a later era Talking Heads song, Radiohead was finally ready to conquer the rock world were their artful alt-rock musings. By just sticking two words together, the band had crafted a band emblem that would carry them to the top of the music world.
