10 Rock Bands Who Had Horrible Original Names

R.E.M. don't seem to get as much credit as they deserve as the kings of alternative rock. While bands like Nirvana may have gotten more success, these guys were defining the alternative rock sound in the 80's that would lay the groundwork for every other band that was to follow. Though the band have their legacy secured at this point, their first steps were a little too grotesque for most.

Throughout their early years, the band was notorious for not securing a band name. With every other show they played, it was anyone's guess as to whether they would stick to their initial moniker. There were a few questionable names like Negro Wives, but by far the worst one had to be Cans of Piss. Even if it was meant as a sick joke amongst the band members, that name could set you up for failure and also give the audience advice as to what they should throw at you should you suck.

So what kind of wild brainstorming session lead to the band choosing R.E.M.? Well, said brainstorming session lasted approximately a few seconds after the band stumbled upon the acronym when looking through the dictionary. It might not be the most glamorous of name decisions, but they had found a name that was a far cry from their futile original efforts.
