8. Pink Floyd
Half of the reason why Pink Floyd were able to spread their wings was because of Syd Barrett. Though Syd may have been the driving force of the band during their psychedelic period, his loss of sanity and eventual dismissal from the group made the entire band recontextualize their songwriting. As they got more of a grasp on progressive rock though, the thought of their former bandmate never left their mind.
After Meddle set everything up right, Dark Side of the Moon was the first real masterpiece from Pink Floyd, meditating on the human condition and being able to empathize with our fellow man and holding onto our sanity in the process. There's a good chance that nothing was going to top an album that has been on the charts as much as Dark Side, but Floyd ventured even further when Roger started to crack under the pressure of being a rock star.
Being reminded of the fallout of Syd Barrett and losing connection with his audience, Roger's brainchild The Wall became one of the most theatrical rock operas ever created, as he tells the semi-autobiographical story of him losing connection with reality before choosing to tear down all of the bricks of security that he had built around his mind. As much as something like Wish You Were Here belongs in this company as well, the kind of raw anger felt on both that record and Animals were subtle steps towards their true potential.
