10 Rock Collaborations That Made Absolutely No Sense
1. Gorillaz/Lou Reed
It's no secret that Gorillaz has always been about collaboration since day one. In case you're not in on everything, this is actually not a musical outfit made up of cartoon characters writing pop songs. No...Damon Albarn is the mastermind behind the collaborations, and he hit upon a stroke of genius by drafting in Lou Reed on Some Kind of Nature.
For any rock fan though, Reed's 2010's work is not particularly a highlight, considering his lackluster collaboration with Metallica just a year or two later on Lulu. Though still in his low spoken word croon, his inclusion on this track is Reed at his most perfect, acting as a sort of experienced poet trying not to be taken over by the more mechanical aspects of the Gorillaz sound.
Playing off the beat perfectly, Reed's slipshot delivery adds a lot more humanity to the rest of the track, which gets even more mindblowing when his speech starts to get chopped up little by little once his verse ends. Going along with the plastic beach theme, it's almost as if you're hearing the machinery win, as the human side of things becomes more and more mechanical with each passing note. Say what you want to about Lou Reed fading from relevancy, but this is almost on par with anything he did in his glory years.
