10 Rock Collaborations That Made Absolutely No Sense
7. Nick Cave/Kylie Minogue
Whenever you throw on any album by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, you aren't really expecting the most cheery of experiences. After all, with over fifty different shades of black in his songwriting arsenal, why would you come to the guy who wrote songs like Red Right Hand for something optimistic and hopeful? Well...why not take that guy...and put him together with one of the biggest pop stars of the '80s?
For the duet Where the Wild Roses Grow, Cave enlisted Kylie Minogue to guest with him on the track, which makes about as much sense as if Angus Young contributed a verse to a Kendrick Lamar track. And yet through some miracle, these two play off each other so well, as Cave dives back into his lower register and manages to have a shred of levity and empathy in his voice.
As much as this makes for a weird sonic cocktail, Minogue actually manages to meet Cave at his level, going for a much more subdued approach to her own vocals to create a duet that almost seems indebted to the days of classical music. Considering how much moroseness is coated throughout all of Nick Cave's music, it's almost through a work of dark magic that this song was actually able to make it to the final cut.
