10 Rock Collaborations That Made Absolutely No Sense

6. Metallica/Marianne Faithfull

During the interim period between St. Anger and the Black Album, Metallica had gone through one of the more drastic tonal shifts of their entire career. As much as the Load/ReLoad era has its fan, the idea of the thrash metal legends selling out around this time still is a point of contention for longtime aficionados for decades. Then again, when you experiment like this, you occasionally get some highlights from the most unexpected places.

Being the big pop single off of ReLoad, the Memory Remains was a bad omen for most fans when listening to the rest of the album, signaling that the sell out territory hadn't worn itself out just yet. Once the chorus hits though, we get a bit of a departure when we hear...what's that?....A WOMAN'S VOICE???

Yeah, instead of James Hetfield singing the unstoppable 'Na Na Na' hook, '60s icon Marianne Faithfull was brought in to deliver the line. As much as this kind of genre whiplash is palpable just saying it out loud, Faithfull actually plays the role brilliantly, almost bringing a sinister edge by embodying the faded prima donna in the lyrics. The chorus has even become somewhat of a fan favorite in the years since, as the crowd normally sings the part whenever it's played in concert. For as wrong as this sounds on paper, sometimes you need a little bit of crazy to steer you in the right direction.
