10 Rock Guitarists Who Were In Two Amazing Bands
2. Pat Smear - Germs/ Nirvana/Foo Fighters
It wouldn't have been surprising to hear that Pat Smear was no longer walking the Earth today if you saw him in his '80s prime. Being a founding member of hardcore punk band the Germs, these guys were some of the most dangerous-looking dudes to ever grace a stage, who took as much out on themselves as they did their audience. Rather than stay in punk rock seclusion, Smear quickly fell into having one of the most coveted gigs any rock musician could ever ask for.
Looking to have more flexibility when playing onstage, Smear landed the job of a lifetime when he became the second guitarist of Nirvana during their tour for In Utero. Bringing a bit of levity to the internal band tension, Smear immediately clicked with Kurt Cobain and gave an extra edge to the band whenever they played live. After Cobain's suicide though, things looked pretty bleak.
In yet another career resurrection, Smear actually got a call from ex-Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl to join what would become the Foo Fighters, where he brought his same punk rock foundation to the post-grunge sound. Even though he has come and gone out of the Foos in recent years, Smear's position in the group now is perfect, as he plays off of the precision of Chris Shiflett with ease. Compared to his other punk rock brethren, Pat Smear is one of those few artists who can claim to have been in 3 legendary acts in his time.
