10 Rock Guitarists Who Were In Two Amazing Bands
3. Dave Mustaine - Metallica/Megadeth
Leaving a band is not always the most pleasant experience. Whether it comes downto creative differences or not being able to tolerate each other, there's always a bit of drama involved when someone just up and leaves their respective project. In Dave Mustaine's case though, it's a bit of a different story when you didn't want to leave the group to begin with.
Originally finding his feet in metal outfit Metallica, Mustaine seemed poised to be a guitar hero, with his outspoken attitude and crazy fretboard runs becoming a signature part of the group's sound as they tore through the Bay Area thrash scene. As they crossed the country to get a record deal though, Mustaine's constant abuse of alcohol resulted in him being ousted from the group as soon as they reached New York. That kind of thing would be a critical blow to your ego, and yet Mustaine found a way to turn that anger and resentment into rocket fuel.
Arriving in San Francisco with an axe to grind, Mustaine hooked up David Ellefson shortly afterwards and formed the backbone of Megadeth, who went on to become a big enough act in the metal sphere to rival even his previous band. Though the Metallica firing does seem like water under the bridge these days, you can't deny the pure anger that was captured on those first few records.
