10 Rock Music Acts Who Peaked With Their First Album

4. Supergrass - I Should Coco

One of the truly great bands to emerge from the Britpop days of the '90s, Supergrass are revered for their intelligent, at times humours lyrics and for have a back catalogue of ridiculously catchy tunes.

Despite putting out six albums in their career so far - a career that ran from 1993-2010 and then recommenced in 2019 - it's hard to look past the Oxford band's debut offering as their absolute best. Not just is I Should Coco an energetic, frenetic masterpiece, but this 1995 offering is also Supergrass' only album to get the coveted #1 spot in the UK charts.

That's not to say that Supergrass put out subpar dross after I Should Coco - with In It for the Money, the self-titled Supergrass, Life on Other Planets, Road to Rouen, and Diamond Hoo Ha all having plentiful charm - but it's more a testament to just how well that debut offering works as a collective across its brisk and punchy 40-minute runtime.

Of course, Alright is the standout track here in a mainstream sense, but there are songs far better than that #2 chart hit on I Should Coco. Caught by the Fuzz, Mansize Rooster, Strange Ones, Sitting Up Straight, and We're Not Supposed To are all prime examples of the outright energy that Supergrass had in those early days.

While the band matured majestically from record to record, it's hard not to hold I Should Coco up on a pedestal as their best output yet.
