10 Rock Music Albums No One Understood At First

4. Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath

When Black Sabbath first strode onto the rock scene, there was no real way to put them into a box. While the idea of heavy metal may exist now, it was a different story all the way back in 1970, with Sabbath being looked at as the ugly cousins of rock and roll with their devilish music. Once people got the chills running down their spine, they wanted nothing to do with whatever the likes of Ozzy Osbourne were working on.

While songs like the titular track from this album and NIB could be considered modern classics for heavy metal these days, most of the critics were more than happy to give this record a thrashing in their reviews, likening the band to what Cream would have done if they weren't as good. There might have been more than a few low blows from the press, but there was also a growing fanbase bubbling up from the rock scene waiting to be unleashed.

Before Sabbath, the heaviest thing you could listen would be anything from Led Zeppelin to the Rolling Stones, and here we had something that was a lot more in your face and was more than happy to cause a disturbance and unsettle you whenever you turned on the stereo. They may have been a mediocre Cream by their standards, but this wasn't about the blues anymore. This was a new art form, and it was about to blow a hole in the entire rock scene within a matter of just a few years.
