Fronted by Iggy Pop before he was impossibly old, The Stooges were a band who were criminally unappreciated in their own time. Want evidence? Look no further than some of the contemporary reviews for their self-titled debut album.
Critics hated this thing when it first came out, lambasting it for being "loud" and "tasteless". Robert Christgau called it "stupid rock at its very best", which is the definition of damning with faint praise.
Iggy and co. needn't worry though, as this album has now been accepted as a classic. Its raw, gritty sound was like nothing else from the time period, but would have fit right in with the garage rock and grunge movements that were yet to come.
