10 Rock Music Bands That Quit On Top

7. Lush

One of the most aptly named bands in modern memory, Lush cultivated a mesmerising sound over four albums with venerable indie label 4AD. Taking the best bits of dream pop and shoegaze, they turned cult sounds into something with real radio appeal over the course of a successful nine-year run.

Inspired as much by garage rock as Beach Boys and The Byrds, the band created colossal soundscapes, walls of guitars that crucially never delved into the all-out assault favoured by contemporaries My Bloody Valentine. First full-length album Spooky was a solid indie hit, but follow-up Split probably remains their highlight, with drawn out, searching tracks like “Light From A Dead Star” and “Desire Lines” showcasing Lush at the height of their ambition.

Final album Lovelife shifts the band closer to the mid-’90s Britpop trend and is most likely their weakest effort, but sales remained strong when they decided time was up. Their sporadic reunions have brought them back to the stage, but as far as recorded output goes, it remains comfortably lodged in the golden age of shoegaze.
