10 Rock Music Bands That Replaced Their Singer

7. Pink Floyd

A lot of people tend to forget just how strange the original version of Pink Floyd was compared to where they ended up. Long before the days of The Wall and Dark Side of the Moon, the iteration of Floyd with Syd Barrett at the helm was a much more zany band the first time around, crafting one of the greatest psychedelic debuts of the '60s on Piper At The Gates of Dawn. It ended up being that very zaniness though that sent Syd into a spiral that he wouldn't recover from.

Slowly drifting mentally, Syd was getting more out of control every time that he performed with the band, always being slightly dazed and even struggling to get through the songs when he played live. To make sure that the band were able to function, David Gilmour was brought in in Syd's place, as the band started to slowly push him out of the band so he could get the help he needed. While Roger Waters became the driving force behind the band, David Gilmour's smooth vocal delivery was a nice change of pace as well.

Not even fashioning himself as a singer, every one of Gilmour's vocal passages on Floyd albums are a nice way to break up the weirdness behind it all, always playing off of Waters' own unique vocal turns during the Wall era. Syd never really left Floyd though, and you can still hear the spirit of him across every single album that they put out during their glory years.
