10 Rock Music Bands That Replaced Their Singer
6. Genesis
If you were going to a Genesis show in the '70s, 99% of the time it was because of Peter Gabriel. Even though every one of their albums sold in droves and became prog rock works of art in the years that followed, the spectacle that Peter would bring to every single show was starting to become bigger than the band could handle, especially when he was donning outfits that made him look like everything from a flower to an STD. Peter needed to stretch further, and Genesis found their new lease on life from the back of the stage.
After trying out loads of different singers in Gabriel's place, Phil Collins stood up from the drum stool out of frustration during one of the rehearsals and figured he'd give it a go, and turned into one of the greatest singers of his generation. While there are still a good deal of Genesis fans who have the discussion that Phil was the one that ruined the band by taking them down a pop direction, that was definitely not the case, especially with albums like A Trick of the Tail being one of the more outlandish outings they ever made.
As much as the band had different sounds during both eras of the band, Phil's tone of voice is actually a bit similar to what Gabriel was doing, only with a much more workhouse mentality than the tender moments of what Peter would become known for on songs like Biko and Don't Give Up. If anything, up and coming bands should learn an important lesson here: KNOW THE VALUE OF YOUR DRUMMER. He may keep time, but he also might have some tricks up his sleeve you weren't prepared for.
