10 Rock Music Bands That Replaced Their Singer
4. Alice in Chains
Most of the hardened grunge fans knew that the Alice in Chains magic died the minute that Layne Staley shuffled off this mortal coil. While Layne was always known for singing the songs that Jerry Cantrell would write, the amount of raw emotion and pain brought out of his soul on albums like Dirt and the EP Jar of Flies was practically half of their appeal in the glory days of the band. The rest of the guys figured that Alice was done for good, but a funny thing happened when they went out to celebrate the band's music one last time.
Doing one off tribute shows as Alice in Chains with a revolving door of vocalists, Comes With the Fall singer William DuVall was a much smoother fit than anyone really expected, having the right cadence to do Layne's vocals justice and harmonizing so well with Jerry that you had to rub your eyes to make sure that you weren't watching Layne up there. After working on some new material behind the scenes, William made the leap to full member of the band on Black Gives Way to Blue, with the same kind of intensity that you would expect out of a traditional Alice in Chains record.
Then again, William is not some hired hand or anything, always bringing a piece of himself into the mix and even verging on some punk rock and full on metal moments in their later years on songs like Last of My Kind. Layne's legacy will live on in every song this band plays, but the Sludge Factory is not going to be closing up shop just yet.
