10 Rock Music Songs That You Didn't Know Were About Drugs
1. Master of Puppets - Metallica
If you're just getting into Metallica, listening to the lyrics of their early work doesn't really matter that much. Since one of their songs on the first album is literally about the art of headbanging, you basically just need to worry about locking into the groove and rocking your ass off for the whole song. Once they started to grow as songwriters, there was a lot more darkness than you thought on Master of Puppets.
When asked about the lyrics, James Hetfield has always said that the title track of their third album is about how drugs have a hold on you, especially when you get down to chopping out your breakfast on a mirror. Though this could easily just be a passing reference to cocaine, the narrator of this song is the addiction itself, almost taunting you about how much it has a hold on your state of mind.
The most poetic part of it comes in the breakdown before the solo, when James screams "FIX ME," which gives way to one of Kirk Hammett's wildest solos. This isn't a weird trade off to the guitar player though. This is the point in the song where the drugs take control and you start your slow descent into Hell. You may enjoy it right now, but just remember that there's no coming back from this.
