10 Rock Musicians That Get Way Too Much Hate
1. Axl Rose - Guns N Roses
When Appetite for Destruction was first unleashed upon the world, it looked Axl Rose was right in the middle of the next rock and roll revolution. In between playing shows as part of the World's Most Dangerous Band, his wild reputation felt like the next logical step coming out of an era of bands that were more about their looks than the actual music. Something funny happened when making their next record though, and Axl Rose quickly went from the street rat frontman to the diva no one wanted to talk about.
Just looking at the accompanying tour for Use Your Illusion, Axl was known as one of the more insufferable people in the music industry, either cancelling shows because he had a sore throat or just not bothering to show up at all. His reputation as a diva also didn't help when the next Guns album had to wait over a decade to actually see a release. Antics aside though, any other singer would not be able to do justice to the kind of swagger Guns had, with Axl putting some real attitude back into rock and roll, channeling the cool factor from someone like Mick Jagger or Steven Tyler on songs like Welcome to the Jungle.
Even outside of Guns N Roses, Axl's turn as the lead singer of AC/DC was shockingly well done, doing justice to both the Bon Scott and Brian Johnson era while also unearthing some deep cuts that hardcore fans thought would never see the stage. Axl might not be the most reliable frontman and might not even be the most pleasant person to be around half the time, but when he's at his A game, you may be in for one of the greatest rock and roll experiences of anyone's lifetime.
